Cruzin' with Susan at ASIS 2006

Security Dealer's editor reports in on vendor integration trends

The evolution taking place in the security industry is all about working together, whether that's with other applications or with technology partners. On today's "cruise" around the ASIS 2006 show floor, I spotted four companies that seem to embody this integration drive: First up, consider AMAG Technology. AMAG is introducing Symmetry, for example, which represents a global rebranding within Group 4. Symmetry means in balance, things that work well together, says Group 4's Kim Loy, which makes sense, because the Symmetry line enables video management inside AMAG's core technology of access control. Not only does the Symmetry software "module" add video functionality to the core access system, but the system tackles not only IP video, but also legacy analog video. According to Loy, the Symmetry line is designed to go beyond integration to the next level of building new solutions.

Dedicated Micros is transitioning from a product-based company (best known for its DVRs) to a solutions company, which means taking a look at integration rather than just selling "units". The company's new president and CEO, Dr. Alan Calegari, comments on the partnerships Dedicated Micros is making with other technology providers: "Seclusion is not the way to operate," he says. "The customer is ever-changing and one company alone cannot sustain innovation."

Interoperability is the message over at Tyco Fire & Security as well. Tying together IT and physical security is at the heart of the company's C-Cure 9000, which Tyco company Software House is heavily promoting at the show. The platform-based application "adds to the security of the security system," explains Peter Boriskin, director of product management for Tyco Fire & Security access control solutions.

Another "integration" initiative found at ASIS is HID Connect, the hardware and software arm of HID Global. It is focused on expanding the use of HID technology beyond HID manufactured products. HID Connect, headed by Debra Spitler, provides a unique platform for software and hardware development capabilities. The basis for HID connect is to allow dealers to help your customers "do more than open the door."
