The GISLAs are given to individuals who have significantly enhanced the information technology (IT) security workforce by demonstrating a leadership role in any IT security workforce improvement initiative, program or project on either a government-wide or agency-specific basis.
This year, three awards are being given, one each for the following categories: Senior Non-IT Security Managers (such as CIOs, CFOs, IGs and project managers) and Senior IT Security Managers who are considered based on their contributions to the overall improvement of the information security workforce; and Non-Managerial IT Security Professionals who have distinguished themselves in the implementation or management of at least a component of an agency's security program.

Each year, a nominations committee within (ISC)2's U.S. Government Advisory Board for Cyber Security (GABCS) reviews the award candidates and recommends final nominees based upon its selection criteria and eligibility requirements. Members of the GABCS also select the three GISLA winners from the identified categories of nominees.
