Tyco IS to expand into small business market

Company to launch operations in Dallas, Chicago, South Florida and Southern California to start

Just as ADT announced it is moving into the commercial security space, with the expiration of its non-compete clause, Tyco Integrated Security has announced it will offer commercial-grade security services to small businesses in selected markets.

According to Mark Van Dover, president of Tyco IS, the company will offer their services to small businesses in Dallas, Chicago, South Florida and two cities in Southern California. "We are focused about our approach," Van Dover said at a press conference at ASIS on Tuesday. "It will be five markets to start, and once we understand all the local requirements and gain a foothold, we will move into another 5 markets, and so on."

"We will compete with ADT, but we will also be competing with all the regional players," Van Dover continued. "It's a big marketplace, and there is room to compete in an open and fair way."

"These were opportunities we werent able to look at until last Friday (the expiration of the non-compete agreement with ADT)," added Mike Moran, Tyco's central region VP.

Van Dover said he anticipates the roll-out in the first five markets to take about a year. "This is definitely a growth opportunity," he added. "This is an attractive, and growing market, but this is not Nirvana - it wont make us grow by 50 percent. Still, it's an avenue we can focus on that is right in our bailiwick and aligns with Tyco's strategy."

Tying into this announcement, Tyco IS released a new video value line on Sept. 18 with the introduction of Holis, a low-cost, commercial-grade IP video surveillance solutions designed specifically for this market. "While there are low cost cameras available in local retail stores, they don’t provide essential capabilities available in commercial-grade solutions that are needed to optimize security,” Mark Bomber, Director of Commercial Marketing for TycoIS, said in a statement. “Designed to address the individual challenges and unique needs of small businesses, Holis is a tailored solution to protect what matters most to business owners – their people and assets – while allowing them to focus on their core business.”

The line offers small businesses low-cost options that combine commercial-grade reliability and high resolution displays with easy-to-use, state-of-the art technology and an experienced service team to aid with ongoing monitoring and management. Small businesses also have the option to integrate a remote management application that enables customers to monitor and manage security systems offsite using any web-enabled device such as a smartphone, tablet or laptop.
