Grant money to fund school security improvements

There is a May 8 deadline to submit applications to receive money from a $16 million federal grant program to help law enforcement agencies provide improved security at schools and on school grounds.  The Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS), part of the U.S. Department of Justice, will fund up to 50 percent of the total cost for one or more of the following: •    Placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting and other deterrent measures •    Security assessments •    Security training of personnel and students
•    Coordination with local law enforcement •    Other measures that may provide a significant improvement in security The program is open to all law enforcement agencies nationwide.  The application process will be competitive and local agencies are expected to provide a matching 50 percent of project costs.
