ESA now accepting applications for the ESA Mentorship Program Class of 2017

July 8, 2016
Deadline to submit an application is Sept. 30

Irving, Texas (July 8, 2016) — The Electronic Security Association (ESA) is now accepting applications for the Class of 2017 ESA Mentorship Program through September 30th. The ESA Mentorship Program is designed to foster the growth of rising leaders within the industry and assist in bridging the gap between multiple generations.

The structured, nine-month program will connect those looking for guidance and growth in their security industry career with industry veterans who have committed to sharing their experiences and perspectives. The program will include  up to 30 mentor/mentee pairs who will be announced at the 2017 ESA Leadership Summit Feb.12-15 in Tampa, FL.

Members of the Young Security Professionals (YSP) Group Council and ESA staff will match mentees with mentors from ESA-member companies based on developmental goals and areas of interest included in the participant applications. Eligible mentees must be under 45 years of age and employed with an ESA member company for a minimum of one year. They must submit a completed application, resume, and letter of recommendation by September 30, 2016, along with their manager’s approval in writing.

The cornerstone of the mentorship program is the comprehensive Professional Development Series, in which mentors and their mentees will meet for a minimum of two hours per month either in person or via phone/video conference. The in-person meetings will begin at the Leadership Summit and also take place at ESX and culminate at the YSP Rising Leaders Forum that features the graduation of each year’s class. Participants also commit to reading two books and attending two webinars in order to complete the professional development series.

2016 Mentor and CEO of Power Home Technologies, Ben Brookhart said “My mentee and I have been talking every month and I feel like it is going great. Our last call was awesome! My reading of Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers helped inspire me to start a new marketing campaign that is kicking off. I read the entire book on vacation and it was a read that I couldn't put down. Thank you for that!”

“I have really appreciated getting to know my mentor,” says 2016 Mentee Jamie Vos, General Manager at Security Solutions NW. “He has inspired me to implement new team strategies from Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers and, in fact, our administration team, who all have different responsibilities, is going through the book and will be working to rally with a common cause to help better the organization by creating a unified team with a purpose.”

Mentors will be vetted on their willingness to share information and perspective, valuable lessons learned throughout their career, adherence to the ESA Code of Ethics, ability to display positive leadership behaviors, and the capacity to give balanced and constructive feedback. Mentees must be able to clearly state personal objectives in professional development with the determination to achieve the goals they have set for themselves, a commitment to the ESA Code of Ethics, and the ability to accept balanced feedback.

Class of 2017 participants are encouraged to attend the 2016 YSP Rising Leaders Forum to meet the inaugural Class of 2016, get a head start on acquiring additional leadership skills and interact with the Mentorship Program alumni.

Space in the ESA Mentorship Program is limited; only 30 pairs of mentors and mentees will be accepted. Review the program requirements and submit your Mentor or Mentee application before September 30th for consideration.
