Libyan Aid Tests 50-Bed BLU-MED Deployable Field Hospital

March 3, 2009

KIRKLAND, Wash. , March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Libyan Department of Relief and Humanitarian Assistance, also known as Libyan Aid, recently established a significant capability for medical disaster response in Benghazi, Libya . On the morning of February 16th , experts from the American-based company BLU-MED Response Systems assisted in a training exercise at Benghazi's Garyounis University where members of Libyan Aid erected the 50-bed mobile hospital. The deployable facility, procured from BLU-MED in the fall of 2008, is an advanced, turnkey shelter system complete with emergency room, operating room, intensive care unit, and digital radiography. Following the first day of training, the Libyan team demonstrated proficiency in erecting and repacking the shelter system without assistance.

In conjunction with the training program a short exercise was performed along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration. Participants included the Coordinator of the People leaderships in Benghazi, the Secretary of the People's Committee of the University of Garyounis-Benghazi, and Director of Security in Benghazi. The President of the National Safety Agency welcomed attendees and thanked all organizations and individuals contributing to the success of this program. Dr. Mohamed Saad Embark, former head of Libyan Aid who inspired and directed the mobile hospital effort, provided a tour of the facility for attending dignitaries.

Procurement of the BLU-MED deployable medical facility was made possible following normalization of relations between the United States and Libya in recent years. BLU-MED's facilities include state-of-the-industry portable fabric shelters, which enable communities to rapidly respond to large-scale disasters with medical facilities, while ensuring a safe, clean environment conducive to advanced-level care in any climate for extended periods of time.
