Kentucky Nuclear Plant Investigates Possible Perimeter Breach

Guards were increasing patrols after a cut was discovered in security fence at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, officials said.

The 3-foot cut appeared to be less than 24 hours old when it was discovered Monday night, USEC Inc. spokeswoman Elizabeth Stuckle told The Paducah Sun. USEC leases the plant from the federal government and enriches uranium into nuclear fuel.

The cut was in an open area and not close to process or storage buildings, Stuckle said. There was no indication that anyone was trying to take nuclear material, she said.

"It could be that someone was just trying to test our security, to see how long it would take us to find it," Stuckle said.
