DHS Expects to Issue CAARS RFP Next Month

Cargo Advanced Automated Radiography System would detect nuclear material in cargo containers

In December the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of a Cargo Advanced Automated Radiography System (CAARS) that would automatically detect shielded and unshielded special nuclear material as well as other contraband such as high explosives and drugs. The system must be able to scan and process data from a 40-foot container in under 15 seconds. DHS hopes to begin production and deployment of CAARS in FY '08. DHS has also issued a draft statement of work for CAARS for industry comment. Sol. No. HSHQPQ-RFI-CAARS. Responses due by Nov. 18.
