In December the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of a Cargo Advanced Automated Radiography System (CAARS) that would automatically detect shielded and unshielded special nuclear material as well as other contraband such as high explosives and drugs. The system must be able to scan and process data from a 40-foot container in under 15 seconds. DHS hopes to begin production and deployment of CAARS in FY '08.
