Drove payloader into front doors in apparent attempt to steal ATM

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) - A loader was rammed through a convenience store and service station here early Wednesday, apparently in an attempt to steal a cash machine, authorities said.

"The payloader went directly through the entrance, and it looks like it pushed the ATM into the store a little ways, and then the subject or subjects had to drag the ATM outside, in an attempt to use the payloader to open it," Clay County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Landsem said.

The cash machine at the Oasis store and BP station was heavily damaged, but the intruder got no cash from it, authorities said. They found a trail of debris heading south to Fargo, N.D.

The front-end loader was abandoned about a quarter-mile away. Police used dogs to search the area but found no trace of the suspect.

Investigators said the loader likely was stolen from a contractor or construction site.
