Arrest precipitated after company representatives began noticing receipt discrepancies

Police are investigating the theft of $80,000 from the Collinsville, Ill., Wal-Mart they say was taken by clerk over an extended period of time.

Judith M. Franklin, 55, of Granite City, was arrested Wednesday at the Collinsville Wal-Mart, 601 Belt Line Road. She was charged Thursday with theft over $10,000, and was expected to be transferred to the Madison County Jail, where she will be held with bail set at $50,000.

The theft was uncovered after Wal-Mart representatives discovered a series of discrepancies with receipts. The company contacted police after determining what appeared to be continuous problems with receipts when Franklin was working, Collinsville Detective Sgt. Dave Roth said.

Roth said he did not know how long Wal-Mart had been investigating Franklin before representatives contacted police.

"It has not been determined when the theft began, but we know it has been happening over an extended period of time," Roth said.
