KIEV, Ukraine -- Police evacuated dozens of passengers at an airport in southern Ukraine after finding a suspicious package that later turned out to be a fake bomb, a police official said Monday.

Bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene after security officers at the international airport in Zaporizhia, 560 kilometers (350 miles) southeast of Kiev, discovered a box containing a "suspicious substance," said Oleksandr Volkodav, a police spokesman.

The parcel contained what Volkodav called "a fake mixture resembling explosives" and was later destroyed, he said. He wouldn't elaborate.

Ukrainian authorities have stepped up security around the country's airports following the recent terrorist attacks in Russia.
