At the ISC West tradeshow coming up March 28-30, 2012, in Las Vegas, industry specifications groups PSIA and ONVIF are holding separate events to promote their specifications and standards processes. The two organizations are creating specifications for standard interoperability among security products, using a collaborative process that brings in manufacturers to design the specification and to develop testing requirements that would ensure products meet the specifications. Both organizations have had active efforts in recent years that were born out of challenges to integrate products from different manufacturers that used proprietary communications specifications for system data. The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA) is holding a breakfast briefing on Thursday, March 29, 2012, from 8:30-10 a.m. PDT in the Venetian Bellini Room 2102 just a minute's walk from the tradeshow floor. The event is designed to create a discussion around the value of the PSIA specifications for interoperability of various security products, including access control, IP video surveillance, intrusion and other product categories, and is primarily of interest for product manufacturers and systems integrators. The program will address the development requirements for implementing PSIA specifications and will discuss the business case behind using these specifications. Besides featuring a panel of vendors, the program includes an end-user (Deon Chatterton of Cisco's security group) to discuss how the specifications can improve technology lifecycle purchasing for security end-users. Representing their companies on the panel are Mark Jarman, president of Inovonics, Gary Myers, VP of Engineering at ObjectVideo, Deon Chatterton of Cisco STS, Mike Regelski, VP of Engineering at UTC Automation Control Systems, and CTO of Mercury Security Corporation Frank Gasztonyi. Later the same day, you can check out the efforts from the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF). Despite having "video" in its name, the ONVIF organization has recently become involved in creating interoperability specifications beyond IP video surveillance. ONVIF is hosting a reception and demonstration of interoperable products in the Venetian Bellini Rooms 2002 and 2003 from 4-7 p.m. PDT on Thursday, March 29. The ONVIF demonstration features demonstrations of interoperability from companies such as Siemens, FLIR Systems, March Networks, DRS, Axis, Arecont Vision, Schneider Electric and Bosch. In addition the demonstration, ONVIF's chairman Jonas Andersson will discuss the group's accomplishments and future plans. Register to attend the ONVIF demonstration and reception.
