Door phone market worth more than $2B in 2014, IHS says

Growth of home automation expected to have a big impact on the industry

According to IHS, the world market for audio and video door phones, which consists of indoor units, outdoor units, accessories, and villa kits, was worth an estimated $2.3 billion in 2014, a $100 million increase from 2013.

The research firm said that one of the biggest trends currently impacting the market is the integration of video door phones with home automation systems.

“The home automation market has grown considerably in recent years, especially in the United States, where several alarm monitoring, cable and telecommunication companies have all released home automation and security products. This is important for the door phone market because IHS expects consumers will want products to integrate into one system all controlled from either a smart mobile device, or a smart alarm/control panel,” Oliver Philippou, senior analyst for IHS, wrote in a research note.

IHS also expects the growth in adoption of home automation solutions to result in increased use of IP systems in the residential market, which will have a residual impact on demand for door phones.

“IP door phone systems have historically been focused on non-residential applications. However, IHS forecasts IP systems to increasingly be used within the residential markets with the introduction of home automation applications,” added Philippou.

Finally, IHS believes that video door phones will follow other technologies, such as mobile phones and laptop computers, in moving to larger screen sizes with touchscreen capabilities.

“Touchscreen indoor units allow more functionality on the indoor unit and facilitate greater ease of integration with other smart-home products, including intruder alarms, lighting controls, and heating systems,” concluded Philippou. “However, IHS forecasts door phone suppliers to experience increased completion from multi-function alarm panel suppliers, for example, Honeywell and its Tuxedo Touch panel.”
