Recap Highlights (01-13-2012)

Jan. 13, 2012

Right out of CES
CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) in Vegas this week is always at least mildly of interest to security professionals, so here’s a run-down. Samsung has consumer-grade security cameras that you can access from your smart phone. There was a genuine Victorinox Swiss Army Knife with a 1TB flash thumb drive included, and it retails for about $3,000! D-Link showed its Cloud Camera 5000, a PTZ camera you can control and use remotely through MyDlink.com. ADT showed off its Pulse services and an app that supports Android smart phone users.

Killing 2G
Telguard has pledged to stop producing 2G cellular communicators because a major industry signal carrier promises to sunset the 2G technology and put 3G technology exclusively in its place. There’s already a move afoot to phase out 2G signals.

Legislation hot topics
Licensing. Auto-renewal. CO equipment consumer safety guidelines. Fire sprinkler tax credits. Municipal monitoring. POTS. FCC radio bands. These are just a few of the legislative and government affairs issues that will affect channel side of our industry in 2012. Read the summary of legislative issues that ESA is tackling on your behalf, and get involved in supporting their work.
