CHARLESTON, S.C., Jan. 24 -- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has named Debra Engel as the federal security director (FSD) for South Carolina's Charleston International, Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach International airports.
"Debra is an outstanding asset to our agency," said Morris McGowan, TSA acting assistant administrator for Security Operations. "Her dedication to the Transportation Security Administration is apparent in her return to the FSD position in Charleston. She is well-versed in the specific needs of the airports in the region and her enthusiasm and commitment to the organization is a model for the team of TSA employees she leads."
Engel returns to her role as FSD after leaving in April 2006 to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as district counsel for the Charleston District. Her previous tenure with TSA at Charleston began in August 2002.
"I am very pleased to have the opportunity to return to TSA and to once again help fight the war on terrorism. The officers who wear the TSA badge are an incredibly dynamic and dedicated group of professionals who protect the flying public on a daily basis. It is a privilege to be able to lead the TSA teams in Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head," said Engel.
Prior to joining TSA Engel was a senior attorney for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In 1988, when with the Corps of Engineers in the Charleston District, she worked on the reconstruction effort in Kuwait after Operation Desert Storm. Her professional pursuits led her to work on environmental, contract and labor law as well as the juvenile court system.
Engel received her law degree from the University of South Carolina and bachelor's degree from Newcomb College of Tulane University.
