Cornet Technology Awarded Contract to Implement Video-Based Intelligent Transportation System

Oct. 27, 2005
System designed to monitor and manage traffic flow and increase roadway security

Springfield, Va. - Video Convergence, the video surveillance products and integration services division of Cornet Technology, Inc. (CTI), announced it has won a contract, valued at more than $1 million, to install an intelligent transportation system (ITS) along I-40 in Asheville, North Carolina. As part of the Asheville-based Taylor & Murphy Construction Co., Inc. team, Video Convergence will be responsible for the purchase, integration and support of all video and networking hardware and software for the ITS.

Intended to improve the flow of traffic in the area, the ITS is part of a road widening project that will cover an expanse of I-40 east of Asheville including the connectors to I-240 and I-26. The system design incorporates closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, microwave vehicle detectors (MVD), and overhead dynamic message signs (DMS). The communications network will consist of wireless radio communication for managing the CCTV cameras and microwave vehicle detectors, and land lines for controlling the dynamic message signs. Together, these pieces will create a comprehensive system to monitor and manage traffic flow, convey information to drivers about road conditions and traffic alerts, and provide an increased level of security along the highway.

Chris Britton, Design-Build Manager, Taylor & Murphy Construction, said, “We knew the ITS portion of our project would be very technical, therefore we wanted a turnkey ITS subcontractor that had the resources, the expertise and the experience to fulfill these requirements. Video Convergence is well suited for this project, so we invited them to be an exclusive team member.”

As the prime contractor on this project, Taylor & Murphy Construction will be responsible for overseeing the entire project including the design for both the ITS and the road widening. The company will also facilitate the construction to widen the road.

“We are pleased to be working with Taylor & Murphy Construction, a leading provider of construction services, to create an enhanced highway environment for the city of Asheville,” said William Ippolito, Director of ITS Operations, Video Convergence division, Cornet Technology, Inc. “With the implementation of an ITS and a wider roadway, travelers will see increased traffic flow in what were once heavily congested areas, relieving the daily frustrations associated with their commute.”
