Technology adds access control to mechanical lock systems

SALEM, Va. (May 1, 2013)— The Security Industry Association (SIA) has awarded the Medeco Aperio™ M100 eCylinder with the 2013 New Product Showcase (NPS) award for Best Wireless Access Control Product at the ISC West Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since its inception in 1979, NPS has been the security industry’s premier awards program.
“Each year, the companies competing in SIA’s New Product Showcase at ISC West present the leading-edge security solutions that are shaping the industry,” said SIA CEO Don Erickson. “These new technologies and solutions are the drivers that are moving the security industry forward, and I congratulate Medeco on its win at this year’s NPS.”
The Medeco M100 eCylinder with Aperio™ technology provides a fast and economical way to upgrade interior doors to access control where greater accountability or access flexibility is required. The M100 is a simple cylinder replacement for an existing mortise-style mechanical cylinder and requires absolutely no wiring or alterations to the door, the frame, or the door hardware. The M100 installs in minutes; completely revolutionizing access control. “Medeco is leveraging their vast understanding of mechanical cylinders to develop retrofit access control products, making the growing requirement of access flexibility and user accountability more convenient and affordable for Security Managers.” says Tom Kaika, President High Security and Aftermarket Group and Medeco Security Locks.
The M100 was developed around common access control protocols allowing it to be easily integrated into existing electronic access control (EAC) equipment. The M100 electronic cylinder communicates wirelessly to an Aperio™ hub using a secure connection. The hub connects to the existing EAC panel using RS-485 or Wieg and protocols, depending on the system. “Security Mangers do not have to learn new software, but rather extend their existing EAC systems to include doors that were previously not practical due to wiring constraints, or were too cost prohibitive.” continues Kaika.
Medeco’s M100 is the only retrofit eCylinder on the market today that integrates into existing OEM hardware and software. The M100 is part of an extensive family of Aperio™ products available from ASSA ABLOY Group brands.
The 2013 NPS awards program included 84 entries from 66 companies. Recognition is based on innovative technologies and pertinence to the security systems installation marketplace. Judges look at the total cost of ownership of the product and its applicability to the dealer-installer network.
ASSA ABLOY has also received the 2013 Building Operating Management (BOM) Top Products Award for its Aperio wireless lock technology.
