SINOCAST CHINA BUSINESS DAILY NEWS via NewsEdge Corporation : WENZHOU, September 03, SinoCast -- Wenzhou Yongqiang Airport started expansion project on August 31. The total investment for it reaches CNY 300 million (USD 1 = CNY 8.2766).

Wenzhou Yongqiang Airport was open to navigation in 1990. Its domestic flights connect 62 major cities in China. The total passengers in 2003 were nearly 1.98 million, ranking the 22nd among China's airports. It is one of the fastest-growing airports.

This airport was originally designed to carry 1.2 million passengers per year. Currently, its airport terminals are only of 6,750 square meters totally, the airport apron is of 80,000 square meters.

It is estimated that this airport would have to carry 2.6 million passengers this year, and 4.2 million in 2012.

Thus Wenzhou Yongqiang airport badly needs to expand. The expansion project includes a new 15,000-square meter airport terminal, 90,000-square meter airport apron, and 13 aircraft parking stand.

The construction has begun at present, and will finish in 2006. By that time, the airport apron will be expanded to 170,000 square meters. By 2012, Wenzhou Yongqiang Airport will be able to carry 4.5 million to 5 million passengers.
