KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A scam focusing on your water bill has cost some Kansas City residents as much as $900.
Police said there have been nearly 20 cases of the latest scam, in which a person calls claiming to be with the Kansas City water department.
The caller said they need your credit or debit card number to pay your water bill because your payment is overdue and you're going to be billed a late fee of $40 unless payment is made over the phone.
Some victims reported that the caller was a woman.
Police said if someone calls you with this, hang up and notify police. Never give out your credit card number, bank account number, Social Security number or other personal information to an unsolicited caller.
If you are concerned about your account, call the phone number listed on your bill.
This type of scam has been around for years. Other scammers have claimed to be calling from gas or power companies.
