ASPEN, Colo. --

Parents in the Aspen School District may soon be able to let their children use their fingerprints to buy lunch.

The district has already bought fingerprint scanners and is testing them using the children of employees, according to the Aspen Times.

If approved, the system would be used in middle and elementary schools.

Parents would be allowed to opt-out and use a card system or similar program.

The goal is to speed up the lunch lines and reduce the number of children losing their lunch money.

The school district has scheduled three meetings next week to talk to parents about the biometric technology and answer their questions.

The Aspen Times reported the system is a relatively inexpensive option, requiring only the purchase of two or three scanners for $200 each.
