Consumers warned to be on the lookout for information stealing devices

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. --

Police are warning ATM customers about two ATM skimmers found at Scottsdale bank locations this past week.

An ATM skimmer is a device that is attached to the card slot of an ATM or gas pump, which criminals use to capture data from the magnetic stripe on the back of credit and debit cards, Scottsdale police said. It is often smaller than a deck of cards.

Police said the skimmers were found on ATM machines near 7000 E. Shea Blvd. and 6500 N. Scottsdale Road.

To protect against credit card fraud, police urge people to regularly monitor their account for unauthorized activity.

Police said if a person thinks an ATM has a device attached to it, do not touch it, but immediately report it to the bank.
