Industry analyst Lee Odess announced from the LEGIC connect25 event in Zurich that dormakaba has joined the LEAF Community, marking what he described as a milestone for access control interoperability.

The LEAF Community is a global network of security providers, including integrators, consultants and technology providers, working to advance interoperability in access control. Through open standards like LEAF Identity and credential options such as LEAF Universal and Universal+, the initiative promotes cross-platform compatibility and future-ready credentialing for both physical and digital systems.

Interoperability becomes an industry expectation

“Interoperability, defined as the ability for different companies, systems, devices, etc., to work together, is no longer optional,” Odess wrote in a LinkedIn post. “It is becoming the expectation across the global security industry.”

Odess, CEO of The Access Control Collective (TACC), emphasized that the move by dormakaba, one of the world’s leading security solution providers, signals a maturing market. He compared the development to shifts seen in other sectors, noting how alliances in apparel, banking and cloud security helped industries move from cottage markets to mainstream adoption.

“Once big players commit, momentum is hard to stop, especially when aligned with customer demand and experience,” Odess said.

dormakaba brings scale and credibility to LEAF

According to Odess, dormakaba brings “scale, reach, and credibility” to the LEAF Community at a time when customers are increasingly calling for interoperable systems. The announcement builds on demand for greater collaboration across the security ecosystem and highlights how the way companies partner, compete, and deliver technology is evolving.

Mehdi Elhaoussine of LEGIC reinforced that point, stating, “Our partners are increasingly seeking flexible solutions. The LEAF interoperability initiative is well aligned with LEGIC’s core product principles and highlights the versatility of our access credential technologies.”

For Odess, the takeaway is clear: the access control industry has reached an inflection point. “With dormakaba joining the LEAF Community, the question is not if interoperability will win, it is how fast,” he wrote.
