SmartBolt™, a first-of-its-kind mortise technology and hardware company, has introduced its first product, SMB1, aiming to bring a new level of innovation to the access control market. The SMB1 is a concealed-battery powered, NFC-operated mortise lockset that fits into standard mortise preparations without requiring additional door pocket modifications.
Designed for both retrofit and new installations, the SMB1 emphasizes security and convenience. The product features automated deadbolt locking, lock and unlock wave technology, remote access and rechargeable batteries while maintaining a sleek aesthetic.
“In over a decade of running one of NYC’s most storied door security integrators, I have watched the industry evolve dramatically with new technologies, but mortise locks seemed to be left behind and only rarely improved via ‘slapped-on’ hardware and not true innovation,” said SmartBolt™ CEO and Founder Stephen Vaknin. “Mortise locks are the standard in NYC and other major markets, and yet the ‘innovative offerings’ had real limitations from the security, design and implementation perspectives. Using our extensive industry backgrounds, we have been able to pinpoint these deficiencies and approach this product from a completely new angle, including end-user experience and design elements without sacrificing security or durability.”
SmartBolt™ combines smart functionality with the quality and precision of traditional mortise locks, designed and built by Accurate Lock & Hardware. The SMB1 offers a dual-deadbolt with auto-deadbolt locking for higher security, an architectural design customizable to project aesthetics, and a proprietary TimeSense™ Door Position Monitor that eliminates the need for magnetic reed switch installation.
The product also introduces Wave E-Toggle™, which uses TimeSense™ technology to allow users to adjust the locking state of the outside handle with a simple hand motion. Technology integration includes Apple and Google wallet credentials, BLE credentials and MiFare DESFire credentials. Its concealed USB-C rechargeable battery inside the mortise case removes the need for additional door modifications, a first of its kind within a UL-Rated door. SMB1 also features narrower backsets available in 2-½ inches and supports cloud-based deployment.
“SmartBolt™ represents the first true door lock innovation in over half a century,” said SmartBolt Vice President Rodd Salvatore. “With our new technology, we are combining the very best in security, convenience and aesthetics. The holy grail of wireless mortise access control for multi-unit developments.”
Vaknin and Salvatore are multigenerational security experts in field sales engineering and manufacturing. Their combined expertise has driven the development of SMB1 to meet market needs. The product is Buy America Act Compliant, designed and built in the USA by Accurate Lock & Hardware in Stamford, CT.
SMB1 will be available for pre-order starting in Q2 2026, with deliveries beginning in Q3 2026.
