WEB-key to ensure safe, secure access to patient medications

WALL, NJ, October 8, 2008 - BIO-key International, a leader in finger-based biometric identification and wireless public safety solutions, today announced that McKesson Provider Technologies is deploying BIO-key’s WEB-key biometric identification technology to enhance the security and convenience of access to medication dispensing cabinets.

McKesson will incorporate BIO-key’s award-winning WEB-key technology into the AcuDose-Rx system to authenticate the identity of users accessing patient medications. With the superior accuracy of the WEB-key biometric authentication software, users no longer need to rely on passwords, which can be easily forgotten or compromised. Authorized users simply touch a sensor to gain access to patient medications.

“By selecting BIO-key’s finger print identification technology, the AcuDose-Rx FastEntry biometrics option provides our customers with unique, industry-leading capability,” said Jeff Thompson, Product Manager for McKesson’s Automation Solution Group. “The NIST-certified algorithm provides positive user identification for security and supports one-touch rapid access to the cabinet. Our customers also value the ability to enroll multiple finger prints from each user so the use of biometrics is not compromised by minor trauma to any one finger. FastEntry is one of many noteworthy enhancements in McKesson’s latest Connect-Rx software version, which also includes significant enhancements to expand the safety, security, and operational efficiency of AcuDose-Rx.”

“In choosing our WEB-key solution, McKesson has the tools to expand its deployment to add finger print biometrics into other personnel authentication applications. For example, they can easily expand the system to replace usernames and password authentication for any current workflow process to improve security and convenience for users accessing a secure area in the hospital or accessing confidential patient records,” added Jim Sullivan, BIO-key’s Director of Commercial Sales.

“We are pleased to be working with McKesson, an international leader in healthcare systems and solutions. By adopting BIO-key’s biometrics, McKesson will improve the security, convenience and cost of managing drug and material distribution,” stated Mike DePasquale BIO-key’s Chief Executive Officer. “We have high expectations that our partnership will change the dynamics for hospitals around the world.”
