BILLERICA, Mass. (AP) -- Identity software company Viisage Technology Inc. said Wednesday it received a $1.1 million contract from Florida's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles for automatic document authentication technology to prevent identity theft and fraud.

The contract is part of a federally funded Department of Homeland Security program to protect critical infrastructure. Florida is the first state to use grant funding for this purpose.

The state agency will use Viisage's iA-thenticate software to detect falsified passports, visas, U.S. and Canadian drivers' licenses, immigration cards and other documents.

Shares of Viisage were up 14 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $8.29 on the Nasdaq in afternoon trading.
