Aprilis Introduces HoloSensor Fingerprint Imaging Technology for Civil and Criminal Identification
MAYNARD, Mass. -- Aprilis, Inc., a developer of holographic imaging technologies and devices for biometric fingerprinting identification and authentication, announced a new generation of fingerprint capture devices with significantly enhanced image quality for optimal AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems) performance and improved moisture-discrimination. Aprilis announced three new fingerprint imagers: HoloSensor HS-500, HoloSensor HS-500L and HoloSensor HS-1000, which are designed to acquire sharp, accurate fingerprint images at 500 and 1000dpi with image areas up to 2 x 2 inches. The FBI has been using a prototype 4000 dpi HoloSensor for a full year, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab has recently taken delivery of an Aprilis system.
The Aprilis HoloSensor HS-500 and HS-500L provide fingerprint capture at greater than 500 dpi (digital and optical) resolution, the current standard for AFIS. The HoloSensor HS-1000 captures fingerprints at greater than 1,000 dpi (digital and optical) resolution, making it capable of obtaining fingerprints for Level III ridge deviation and pore detail capture, enrollment, and matching, the next step in AFIS accuracy advancement. A key feature of the HoloSensor HS-1000 is its ability capture fingerprints at 1,000 dpi for future AFIS Level III yet maintain images to be fully backward compatible with existing 500 dpi AFIS and iAFIS systems. As AFIS standards improve and the need for higher image quality increases, the HoloSensor product line will evolve to include a 2,000 and 4000 dpi model currently in the final phase of development.

The introduction of the HoloSensor product line, with its holographic lens element, marks a fundamental improvement in optical fingerprint imaging. The HoloSensor HS-500, HS-500L and the HS-1000 all produce high-quality images over a wide variety of subject finger conditions. The HS-500 and HS-1000 have an effective imaging area of 24 x 30-mm (1 x 1.2-inches), while the HS-500L has an enlarged imaging area of 50 x 50-mm (2 x 2-inches) for both roll and flat fingerprint capture.
