The Providence (R.I.) Journal has reported that police in East Providence will begin enforcing a false alarm ordinance that went into effect in March 2005.
The East Providence ordinance, which set fines that increased from $100 for the fourth offense, $250 for the fifth and $500 for the sixth, was enacted to help recoup costs of police response for false alarms. The city does not use a registration program.
According to the report in the Providence Journal, Police Department Services Commander Captain Dennis Charbonneau notified known false alarm offenders in the fall and followed up with calls to make sure that businesses understood the new ordinance.
