Nebraska bill would require installation of CO detectors

March 22, 2013
Law would apply to dwellings that contain fuel-fired heaters, appliances

A bill recently introduced in the Nebraska Legislature by State Sen. Sara Howard would require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in homes under certain conditions after Sept. 1, 2014.

Under the Carbon Monoxide Safety Act (LB 427), sellers or renters of single-family or multi-family dwellings which contain a fuel-fired heater or appliance, fireplace or attached garage would have to ensure CO detectors are installed "within 15 feet of the entrance to each room lawfully used for sleeping purposes."

In addition, the law would also require people seeking building permits which meet the aforementioned conditions to install CO detectors.

The act would not hinder cities or counties from enforcing their own, more stringent carbon monoxide ordinances.
