Two global authorities on cargo security and supply-chain technology will join 22 other major speakers at the first-ever seminar on the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and related technologies to enhance cargo security and efficiency. With pre-registration Dec. 5, the seminar will be held Dec. 6-7 at the Long Beach Hilton, and includes a morning field trip to a terminal facility at the Port of Long Beach to see how RFID solutions are being deployed there.
M.R. (Mic) Dinsmore, CEO of the Port of Seattle, will open the Dec. 6-7 seminar with a keynote address on RFID-related technologies that have been used in several operational environments to enhance the visibility and security of containers heading into U.S. ports. A recent addition to the program is Dr. Robin Koh from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who will discuss the Food and Drug Administration's RFID mandate to authenticate pharmaceutical products shipped into the United States.
"The National Cargo Security Council, as a leading organization for supply-chain security professionals, planned the seminar to focus on how RFID and related wireless solutions can help combat a wide range of commercial cargo, military and Homeland Security threats, ranging from terrorism, theft, counterfeit goods and smuggling," said NCSC Chairman David A. Jones of Tommy Hilfiger USA, Inc. "Speakers from Stanford, BearingPoint, ARC Advisory Group, Deloitte Touche and others will also present new reports showing how RFID can provide a link between improved supply chain security and efficiency."
NCSC, RFID Journal and the Journal of Commerce media enterprises are co-hosting the seminar, and a number of other media are participating. RFID Journal's Executive Editor, Mark Roberti, will be a featured speaker at the event. "A lot of attention has been focused on RFID's ability to help companies track goods in their supply chain, but RFID does a lot more," said Roberti of the RFID Journal. "This event will focus on an area that is of critical interest to all businesses and government officials -- using RFID to help ensure the integrity of shipments and to prevent the global supply chain from being used as an instrument of terror."
In addition, global government, commercial and academic authorities will highlight strategic and tactical cargo security operations from the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Defense, Federal Drug Administration, Target Corporation, Hasbro, Starbucks, and International Paper. Other speakers include Stanford's Dr. Hau Lee; Gen. Dennis Jackson (USA, Ret.); and, Hutchison Port Holdings Chief Security Officer Gary Gilbert . A number of major solution providers also will be there with tabletop demos.
The seminar will include eight sessions on real-world, real-time solutions leveraging RFID and other Automatic Identification and Data Collection technologies, such as sensors, biometrics and satellite tracking systems.
