ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Xerox Corp. is building a toner plant at its manufacturing hub in suburban Rochester, creating at least 40 new jobs.
The $59 million investment will also help retain about 50 existing jobs at Xerox's 1,100-acre campus in the suburb of Webster, the office equipment maker said Thursday.
Xerox employs about 8,300 people in the Rochester area. Since 2001, its worldwide payroll has fallen by more than a third to 58,000.
Construction of the six-story plant, scheduled to start later this year, will take about two years. The plant will be used to produce emulsion aggregation toner, an advanced type of dry ink for printer cartridges that creates sharper images.
The toner, introduced three years ago, is made at a Xerox plant in Mississauga, Canada. The expansion will more than double Xerox's production of the toner, the company said.
