U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall, D-Ga., has been named to co-chair a House Armed Services Committee panel to assess the military's ability to deal with terrorism and radical Islam.
The eight-member group is one of six armed services teams that will assess a broad spectrum of threats to the nation's security. Other panels will look at current and emerging nuclear powers, regional conflicts and flash points, regional powers, asymmetric and unconventional threats and non-traditional missions and catastrophic disasters.
Marshall spokesman Doug Moore said the terrorism panel had an organizational meeting Tuesday. "Tomorrow and the rest of the week, we'll we looking at alternative views on counter-terrorism," he said, "including overviews from Combat Command and the Defense Department. It's going to be very in-depth to determine what our military is capable of doing to fight terrorism both today and in the future."
Moore said everything is on the table, including policy recommendations, possible legislation and program funding. "We want to look at whatever needs to be done to reorient the military to address these threats," he said.
