Massachusetts Gets $64 Million in Homeland Security Funds

Washington -- Massachusetts will receive more than $64 million in federal homeland security grants, including funding for first responders and the city of Boston, the Department of Homeland Security is expected to announce Friday.

Boston will receive $28 million for security assistance. The state is slated to get nearly $34.4 million, including almost $22 million in grants that will be distributed to communities across Massachusetts.

Other funding will flow to terrorism prevention and medical response programs and emergency management grants.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., said he was pleased with the funding, but added that "the federal government needs to do much, much more in the coming years because Washington is not providing the tools needed to meet the security threats facing all our cities and towns."
