Illinois Initially Approves $5.5 Million for Security at Capitol Building

According to a news report the (Illinois) State Journal-Register, the shooting death of a security guard in September has prompted a $5.5 million proposal for funding of security at the Illinois State Capitol.

The guard, William Wozniak, was shot when a man fired a shotgun while just inside the entrance to the capitol.

The response from the state has already included $300,000 in metal detectors and X-ray machines according to the State Journal-Register.

With another $5.5 million on top of that, the state is expected to hire a police force for the state capitol and to spend $600,000 on an access control system using card control.

In the newspaper's article, one state representative noted that security was scaled up after the Sept. 11 attacks, but has become complacent and rolled back since then.
