Raytheon Taps Opengear for AutoTrac III Air Traffic Technology

July 31, 2007

SANDY, Utah, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Opengear today announced that Raytheon Company, a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world, has deployed Opengear's CM4000 console servers as their standard console management solution behind their AutoTrac III Air Traffic Technology. Opengear's console servers will be leveraged immediately by United Arab Emirates as part of their agreement to implement AutoTrac III as their new Air Traffic Management (ATM) system for Dubai Airport.

Raytheon which has provided more than 350 automated Air Traffic Management systems to customers worldwide and more solid-state Air Traffic Management surveillance radars than all other manufacturers combined, is using Opengear's CM4116 and CM4148 units for remote administration of its development environments, for jumpstarting its lab servers and to provide console access to all of its servers from a central location.

System administrators now have total remote access to the network, which allows them to preempt all major issues from a simple tower automation application to a fully integrated national multi-center system. This reduces the response time for problem solving, and provides operational cost savings, as well as higher network availability.

"We were looking for a solution to manage our Sun servers and workstations all of which were running some version of Sun Solaris," said Joseph S. Castellino of Raytheon Engineering. "We prefer to use CLI for configuration because we don't always have graphics capabilities in place depending on individual configuration. After researching other console management applications, we knew Opengear's CM4000 console servers were the best fit for AutoTrac III.

"Opengear's CM4000 took serial console management technology another step forward by adding secure network console management to ensure the one device also provides secure out of band management access to LAN managed devices and service processors. However, at its core the CM4000 is still a robust, quality serial console server. "For managing high-end networking and telecom gear, and for managing headless multiplatform servers a plain-old serial port is generally what is needed," said Bob Waldie , CEO of Opengear. "This is exemplified by the engineering decision at Raytheon, where they're remotely managing Sun servers in an extremely GUI environment. But for simplicity and reliability they chose to use serial console access to meet their critical remote management needs."
