EVENT: The International Center for Terrorism Studies at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, the Hudson Institute, and the Inter-University for Terrorism Studies host a seminar on "Germany and Terrorism: The Next Phase?" In light of the failed bombing plots in Germany, the panel will assess the outlook for homegrown and external threats as well as Germany's counterterrorism strategies, including international cooperation. Swetnam, CEO & Chairman, Potomac Institute for Policy Studies Prof. Yonah Alexander, Director, International Center for Terrorism Studies 12:15 p.m. Dr. Andreas Prothmann, Counselor (Political), Embassy of Germany Since July 2006, Dr. Andreas Prothmann has been the Counselor for Political Affairs at the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. His portfolio includes Middle East, Counterterrorism and Homeland Security issues. Dr. Prothmann is a career diplomat. Prior to this present assignment, he served as Deputy Head, Human Resources Division at the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Berlin (2003-2006); Deputy Chief of Mission at the German Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (1999-2003); desk officer Cultural Relations and Education Policy Division at the Directorate-General for Culture and Communication (1996-1999) and in the Legal Directorate-General (1989-1991) of the Federal Foreign Office. He served as Deputy Consul General at the German Consulate General in Seattle (1994-1996) and as First Secretary at the German Embassy in Moscow (1991-1994). Dr. Prothmann has a Doctorate in European Law from Passau University. Dr. Dieter Dettke, Guest Scholar, American Institute for Contemporary German Studies Dr. Dettke is currently a guest scholar at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies and Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, Security Studies Program. Dr. Dettke was a U.S. Representative and Executive Director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation from 1985 until 2006. He was a Transatlantic Fellow of the German Marshall Fund in 2006 and was a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars from 2006-07. He studied Law and Political Science in Bonn and Berlin, Germany and Strasbourg, France and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1967-68. He began his professional career as a Research Associate of the German Council on Foreign Relations in Bonn in 1969, served as Foreign Policy and Security Policy Advisor of the SPD Parliamentary Group of the German Bundestag from 1974 to 1984 and as Staff Director of the Office of State Minister in the German Foreign Office in 1982.
