Celebrating Innovation in the Security Industry
The Security Innovator Awards is the industry’s only 100% peer-nominated program to recognize the innovative contributions made by individuals in the security industry – from integrators to consultants, to practitioners, to manufacturers and service providers.
This year’s group of Security Innovators is as diverse as it is experienced. We received peer nominations from all walks of the security industry, from CEOs all the way to software developers, front-line installers, and consultants.
The following profiles of these security industry luminaries were all written by the person who actually nominated them, or, in the case of someone nominated by multiple people, a conglomeration of the nomination summaries.
How The Submission and Selection Process Worked
Instead of forming a panel or a committee to accept and vet nominations, we opened this award to anyone to be able to recognize a fellow employee or a partner with whom they work closely for being innovative. We think it fills a unique void in this industry for peer-nominated recognition.
Through email outreach and social media, we asked everyone in the industry to nominate a deserving colleague for consideration. We asked them to focus on a key aspect of the nominee’s innovation.
- Devised a new or innovative way to deploy a technology solution;
- Stepped up during a crisis or other emergency;
- Went above and beyond to have a positive impact in the community or for our industry;
- Developed a new, game-changing technology, feature, or standard;
- Demonstrated a long career of innovation;
- And more – anything industry-related and innovative was considered.
As long as both the nominee and nominator actively work in the security industry, the nomination was accepted. Editor’s Note: Nearly all of the following Security Innovator profiles have been shortened and summarized.
Read on to learn more about this year’s Security Innovators, and keep in mind the innovative people both within your organization and those you work with outside of it to be honored with this award for 2026!

“The most significant advancement I’ve seen in my career is wireless locks,” LaPierre says. “When we first introduced them, they were deployed cautiously. Now, they are everywhere – installed by the thousands and expected on nearly every new access control project.”
As technologies evolved, so did Lester’s impact. In the late 2000s, he led the early adoption of IP-enabled locking solutions, helping clients integrate physical security into their broader IT ecosystems. Since joining ASSA ABLOY in 2007, he has served as a strategic force in business development for Electro-Mechanical and EAC solutions. And in 2025, Lester’s influence is stronger than ever. He manages the company’s Authorized Channel Partner and Certified Integrator programs, which are central to the deployment of integrated locking solutions using technologies such as WiFi, PoE, Aperio, OSDP, and Wiegand.
Lester’s impact isn’t limited to technology or product development. He brings a mentorship mindset to every aspect of his work, investing in others to elevate the entire industry. Whether he’s training a new specialist, leading a certification program, or recognizing a standout team member, Lester brings a personal touch to technical excellence.
“My role [at ASSA ABLOY] is really the culmination of everything I’ve done,” he reflects. “I’ve been fortunate to have the latitude to contribute across product development, partner enablement, training, and strategy. Most importantly, I’m surrounded by a team and leadership that believes in spotlighting excellence. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone you’ve mentored succeed.”
His vision, drive, and people-first leadership continue to inspire others at a time when the security industry is undergoing rapid transformation. From cloud-based systems to mobile credentials and AI-integrated platforms, Lester remains at the cutting edge, helping clients and colleagues alike navigate the future of secure access.
Action-oriented, deeply knowledgeable, and grounded in integrity, Lester LaPierre is not just keeping pace with the future of access control – he is helping to build it. With a legacy still in the making, Lester LaPierre exemplifies the spirit of innovation, service, and leadership that this award celebrates.
“A mentor once told me to never leave a job you enjoy,” he says. “Well, I love what I do. We have the best solutions, the best team, and we’re making a real impact every day. Being part of the ASSA ABLOY family is truly an honor.”

Garrett Larsson
CEO, Rhombus Systems
Nominated by: Kyle Peterson
Garrett Larsson understood a fundamental and pervasive gap in physical security, where organizations’ data lives in siloes and system openness is treated as a risk. His unique approach at Rhombus continues to flip that assumption by proving that open physical security systems can offer advantageous flexibility right alongside best-in-class physical security hardware. Where competitors forced customers into proprietary ecosystems, Garrett has championed an “all-data-through-API” philosophy that has set the company apart. Under his leadership, Rhombus’ uniquely open platform prioritizes seamless integration between various security technologies (including cameras, access control, and alarms), allowing organizations freedom to combine solutions. This openness empowers customers to build the exact security technology stack that best suits their specific requirements and use cases, rather than being confined to a single vendor’s ecosystem. One of Rhombus’ most innovative and newest releases, Rhombus Relay Lite, exemplifies this openness. The solution fundamentally alters the economics and logistics of physical security integrations, enabling organizations to transition to cloud-managed security at their own pace.

From branding programs and tailored marketing support to practical education and community engagement, Jake continuously pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in this space, finding new and innovative ways to add value to our customers and for the security industry as a whole.
Jake’s innovation doesn’t stop at logistics and business strategy. He’s also a natural community builder. His LinkedIn presence is one of the largest in the security industry, where he regularly shares insights, encourages dialogue, and highlights trends. He’s the owner of the Burglar Alarms Online Facebook group, a 10,000+ member community of security professionals who turn to each other, and to Jake, for advice, support, and up-to-date information. Through these platforms and more, Jake is continually working to bridge the gap between manufacturers and integrators and to foster an ecosystem where everyone has a seat at the table, no matter how big or small their footprint in the industry.
Jake is a committed leader with a passion for shaping the future of security. Outside of his role at SS&Si Dealer Network, he makes a great effort to invest in the industry as a whole. He has served as Co-Chair of TMA's Marketing & Communications Committee, as Associate Director of the Integration Association of Florida, is currently serving as a member of SISC, and was just elected as Associate Member Director on the ESA Board. He’s been actively involved in major industry initiatives, such as the TMA AVS-01 video verification standard, and continues to lend his voice to conversations that define where the industry is headed.
Last year, Jake was recognized by SIA "25 on the RISE" as one of the industry’s top emerging leaders, a well-deserved honor for someone who brings both vision and grit to everything he does. And as an emerging leader, he’s just getting started.
I work closely with Jake on a day-to-day basis. I get to hear his big ideas and witness his passion for what he does. I can say from first-hand experience that his vision is only getting bigger.
