Bruce Schneier to Speak at National Press Club Panel to Discuss Privacy and the Presidential Election

Oct. 2, 2008

WASHINGTON , Oct. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Noted author and computer security expert Bruce Schneier will speak at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on Monday, October 6 . Schneier is a popular commentator on security issues and the author of many books, including "Beyond Fear: Thinking Sensibly about Security in an Uncertain World." Schneier will be joined by other leading experts in law and technology.

The event is organized by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) to promote public discussion about privacy and the Presidential campaign. Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr spoke at a Press Club event, hosted by EPIC, in September.

The four independent candidates for President recently said that privacy is one of the top issues facing voters in November. They called for repeal of the Patriot Act, revisions to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the end of immunity for companies that spy on the American public, and the excessive use of Presidential powers.

Senator Obama and Senator McCain have posted policy statements about privacy on their web site, but neither candidate has addressed this issue directly during the campaign.

"Privacy is an ongoing concern for the American public," said EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg . "Between warrantless surveillance of the American public and the growing problems of identity theft and security breaches, it is clear that the next President will face big challenges."

EPIC is a public interest research center in Washington, DC . EPIC was established in 1994 to focus public attention on emerging civil liberties issues and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values. EPIC launched the Privacy'08 campaign to focus public attention on privacy challenges facing the country.
