Georgetown County, S.C., is rescinding its alarm ordinance that the county passed earlier this summer.
The ordinance had required all fire and burglar alarm systems to be registered for a one-time fee of $25.
That doesn't mean the county won't be addressing the issue of false alarms. According to the Georgetown Times newspaper, the county is studying an ordinance from Florence, Ala., that uses no registration but requires an alarm system decal to be displayed that includes primary and alternate contact numbers.
The Alabama ordinance the county is considering as a model also requires penalties for false alarms, option of non-response for repeated false alarms from a business or home, and that the alarm be shut off in 15 minutes to cut back annoyance to neighbors.
