High school stadium and new elementary school approved by school board

On Monday the school board awarded a $6.8 million contract to Titan Construction to build a new football stadium and track at Shawnee Mission North High School. The project is more than 50 percent over its projected budget of $4.5 million.

The board also approved a bid to build a new Merriam Elementary School.

The stadium project, which is being funded by a 2004 bond issue, will demolish the existing stadium and track. The new stadium will have a combination football and soccer field, a running track, seating for approximately 6,000, a press box, locker rooms, public restrooms, concession areas, a ticket booth and storage facilities.

District voters passed a $184 million bond issue in April 2004. The bond issue includes money to build six elementary schools and new gyms and science labs at each high school.

The school board also approved the following Monday:

New Elementary School: A construction contract for more than $8.9 million for a new elementary school. The school will be built on the Merriam Elementary site with construction beginning in the next four to eight weeks. The school will hold 550 students and will open for the 2007-2008 school year.
