The Wednesday Outlook: Rudy Giuliani and More Great Sessions

Sept. 29, 2004

Fifty years from now, when most of us will have retired from the security industry, and when the topic of "convergence" will have become a long-dead discussion and the day's security challenges turn to encrypted sub-atomic communications, Rudy Giuliani's name will still be a household name for Americans and security industry professionals. That "household name" comes to ASIS 2004 on Wednesday from 8 - 9 a.m. for the event's keynote speech, and he returns from 11 a.m. - 12 noon for a Q&A session in Ballroom C. Don't expect Giuliani to help you decide whether you need the low-light camera or the infrared model, but you can count on Giuliani addressing the industry about what security means in the wake of 9/11, and logic suggests that this former New York mayor will give the security industry an invective and a distinct mission as we move forward.

Other top tips for Wednesday include a 1:30 program from Carl Peed, U.S. Justice Department, as he discusses "a national strategy for private security and law enforcement cooperation."

Good communications doesn't mean just a clear signal between your cameras and DVR. Consultant Dale Moyer presents from 11 to 12 on the concept of leadership communications and management. Remember, social engineering that circumvents security often starts with a missed communication or improper leadership, so this is a great chance to brush up on the communication skills that you'll need not only in an emergency situation, but in your everyday business.

Other hot sessions you can expect will be "Selling Your Security Program with ROI" from 1:30 - 3 p.m. with Lew Wagner, CISO of Clarion Health Partners, and "Physical Security at the Iraqi Museum" with commentary from the crew that planned the protection of this Middle Eastern cultural goldmine.
