Marketing Matters: Turn Every Install Into Three Referrals
Key Highlights
- 91% of customers would give a referral; only 11% of salespeople ask -- that gap is the cheapest growth opportunity in the business, and almost nobody closes it.
- Customer goodwill peaks at the post-install walkthrough and decays every day after; that moment is your highest-converting ask, and most integrators walk right past it.
- One line added to the walkthrough checklist -- asking for three specific names -- costs nothing and turns a single satisfied customer into a referral pipeline.

A widely cited sale survey idicates that 91% of customers would happily give a referral; yest, only 11% of salespeople ever ask for one.
That gap is the cheapest growth opportunity in your business, and after 15 years watching companies in the security industry win and lose leads, I can tell you almost nobody closes it.
By the end of this column, you'll have a referral system that runs on your existing install schedule, costs nothing, and starts tomorrow morning.
Why it Needs a Process
Referrals are the only lead source you treat like weather instead of infrastructure. Monitoring has a process, service calls have a process, and even your truck inventory has a process. But referrals – your highest-converting, lowest-cost channel – run on hope. A few trickle in every year, and that trickle is the trap, because it feels like proof the channel works when it's actually proof that nobody owns it.
Great work doesn’t generate referrals; it generates permission, and permission expires.
You would never let your RMR just happen, yet your best acquisition channel runs unattended. And when I press integrators on this, I hear the same five words every time: "My work speaks for itself."
It doesn't. Great work doesn't generate referrals; it generates permission, and permission expires. Customer goodwill peaks in the hour after the win, then decays every day you wait. Insyead of asking "How do I get more referrals," you should be asking, "When does my permission peak, and am I standing there when it does?"
For integrators, the answer is built into the job itself: the post-install walkthrough. No plumber gets that moment, and no HVAC tech gets it. You do.
Think about your last install: the system goes live, you're standing in the kitchen walking the customer through the app, and she's arming it from her phone, checking the camera, grinning. "This is great." Then the handshake. The truck door. And silence.
She was never asked, so she never referred, and that wasn't bad luck. Research on referral timing shows the pattern clearly: Asks at the moment of peak satisfaction dramatically outperform asks made weeks later, when enthusiasm has faded and you're just another line on a bank statement. You left that referral standing in the kitchen.
Start Getting Referrals Today
The fix costs nothing and starts tonight. Add one line to your walkthrough checklist: "We build our business on referrals. Who are three people who'd want this same peace of mind? A neighbor, a family member, a business owner you know."
Say it word for word, because the named number matters: "three people" makes a brain start searching, while "anyone you know" makes it shrug. Then remove all friction. She gives names, and you do the work – texting the follow-up within 24 hours – and when a referral closes, you tell the person who sent it, every single time. Closing that loop is what turns one ask into a pipeline.
Some walkthroughs produce one name, some five. Standing in that kitchen is the cheapest lead you'll ever generate – ask at every single install and the numbers take care of themselves.
