Bruker branches into explosives detection market
Bruker Corporation, a scientific research and development company known for technologies in the areas of health imaging and superconductivity, is branching into the world of airport-based explosives detection.
The company announced on Thursday that it had developed a bench-top explosives and drug detection system. The product, called the DE-tector, comes out of research and technology that Bruker had done in the field of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS). The unit was specifically designed for airport environments and general homeland security applications.
Along with this new detection system, the company has renamed its Bruker Daltronics NBC Detection business unit as Bruker Detection. It's a move that company officials say "reflects the new broader focus and much larger accessible market of this business." That business unit will be focusing on chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives (CBRNE) detection, and the company says it sees opportunities for those applications in both security as well as in safety. Bruker Detection will be run by Sebastian Meyer-Plath. Meyer-Plath has been simultaneously named the executive vice president and general manager of Bruker Detection.
Frank Laukien, the president and CEO of Bruker Corporation, said that, "With all the detection technologies available within Bruker, entering the explosives and drug detection market is the next logical step in developing the Bruker Detection division's product and applications portfolio." We are excited about Bruker Detection's good revenue growth and margin performance, and we intend to further expand this business."
