ROME -- Two security officers at Milan's Linate airport have been suspended after a passenger carried a handgun aboard an Aer Lingus flight to Dublin, airport officials said.

A Dublin-bound cash courier was able to carry his legally-held weapon on board after it went undetected in routine airport checks, according to the daily Il Giorno, which said the incident happened Wednesday.

Airport management company SEA described the incident as "very serious", and said it had suspended the security officer operating an x-ray machine and his immediate superior.
