MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (AP) - A Hampton Inn and a real-estate office in west St. Louis County were evacuated Tuesday while police tried to determine if a pickup truck parked there was filled with explosives.
Police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the truck belongs to a man who had stayed at the hotel in the Westport area and was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric center Monday after allegedly making some kind of threats at the St. Charles County Courthouse.
Family members of the man called police Tuesday after finding boxes, marked as explosives, in the truck, police told the newspaper. A bomb-sniffing dog indicated the presence of explosive material, authorities said.
A St. Louis County police bomb squad robot was to unload the boxes, which would then be examined with a portable X-ray machine.
Police were questioning the man.
