SecurityDNA podcast recap: the case for boosting school security

Aug. 3, 2023
In this episode of SecurityDNA, join host Steve Lasky of SecurityInfoWatch and Max Schachter, a school safety advocate and founder of Safe Schools for Alex, for an important discussion about policy in the wake of mass shootings.
Being a student in the U.S. now carries a different set of challenges than it did in previous decades. America’s youth must now contend with the near-constant threat of mass school shootings, which have escalated drastically in recent years. None recognize this looming threat more intimately than Max Schachter, who lost his son, Alex, in the devastating Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that resulted in 17 deaths.

In this episode of SecurityDNA, join host Steve Lasky of SecurityInfoWatch and Max Schachter, a school safety advocate and founder of Safe Schools for Alex, for an important discussion about policy in the wake of mass shootings, how vital it is to implement training for active shooter situations, and the importance of prioritizing safety in our schools above all else.

Schachter: “We prioritize safety before education throughout the state. If the kids don’t feel safe, and if they and the staff don’t make it home every day to their families, nothing else matters. History is going to repeat itself, and we’ve got to learn the lessons from past tragedies to make sure they don’t happen in another community.”

After the tragedy at Parkland, Schachter has dedicated his life to his son’s memory by taking up the fight himself. Learn about his efforts to make lasting change in school safety policy, his mission to educate teachers, parents, and students about best practices in active shooter situations, and his unique experience as both an agent of change and a father seeking justice for his son.
