Another fake pipe bomb was found at Freedom High School on Wednesday afternoon, this time at the bottom of the school's swimming pool during the middle of swim team practice.
The Walnut Creek Bomb Squad was called out for the second time in two days. Authorities destroyed the device and the area was deemed safe at 2:40 p.m.
School was out for a staff development day Wednesday, but 20 swim team members were in the deep end of the pool when the coach spotted the suspicious device at the shallow end. Practice was immediately canceled.
Principal Eric Volta said he wasn't concerned about the safety of the campus, but he was worried about the emotional well-being of students and parents and the threat of copycats.
The discovery of two suspicious devices that resembled pipe bombs led to a campus lockdown and early dismissal Tuesday. Two of the devices contained sand and the other was full of air.
All of the devices were described as pipes with plastic caps. Authorities will continue investigating the case. There are no motives or suspects, they said.
Volta is scheduled to address the student body via the campus radio station today and campus camera surveillance will be re-set to better view every portion of the school.
