Wireless Technology Drives Public Cameras

The trend toward municipal public security cameras has a number of drivers, not the least of which is an improvement in wireless technology.  Affordable and reliable wireless transmission of cameras is making it much easier for cities to install and implement camera systems for public safety.  Wireless mesh systems are particularly advantageous because they have built-in redundancies. Mesh networking is a relatively new way to transmit data between radio nodes, which may number in the hundreds for a large network.  The data moves from node to node until it reaches its destination.  The manner in which all nodes are connected keeps the network operating even if one or more nodes go bad.  This is where the redundancy comes in -- making for a reliable network.  The potential benefits of wireless mesh networks for municipal and campus installations include: o    Flexibility – Wireless mesh cameras are not wired and they can be easily moved, realigned or repositioned.  Cameras can be set up almost anywhere. o    Cost effective -- Wireless systems require no costly trenching or communication wiring. o    Scalable -- Cameras can be easily added or subtracted. o    Reliable – The node configuration allows for continued transmission even if a single node fails. o    Wireless security systems can cover large areas providing a security solution where it might otherwise be impossible or too costly. o    Secure – Wireless systems use highly sophisticated encryption technologies. Wireless mesh systems are not limited to cameras.  Any network device can be connected to the mesh network including access control and intercoms. -- James Lantrip, Regional Director for ADT Security Services
