Last week, the Security Industry Association announced that it has launched the SIA Health Care Security Interest Group, which was created with the goal of helping to address challenges related to security issues in hospitals and other health care settings.
The group includes representatives of end-user organizations and SIA Member companies. It is chaired by Jim Stankevich, global manager for health care security at Tyco Security Products, and co-chaired by Bonnie Michelman, director of police, security and outside services at Massachusetts General Hospital and Partners Health Care.
“We have a great group of people with a vast amount of knowledge and experience in health care security,” Stankevich said. “I think we can make a significant contribution to helping ensure the security of hospital patients, staff and visitors.”
“I’ve worked with several of the members on many projects, and I’m looking forward to helping this group become a highly regarded source of information and analysis on the issues that my hospital and others face every day,” Michelman said.
Other group members include:
- Steven Bourg, Memorial Hermann Health System (Houston, Texas)
- Marilyn Collins, ASSA ABLOY
- Jim Crumbley, Risk Response Team
- Lauris Freidenfelds, Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, Ill.)
- Mark Hardtke, Mercy Hospital and Medical Center (Chicago, Ill.)
- James Kendig, The Joint Commission
- Scott Lord, All Systems
- Kyle Parker, Arecont Vision
- Anne Rogers, PMTech-Pro
- Ben Scaglione, G4S
- Sheila Stromberg, HID Global
- Bryan Warren, Carolinas Health Care System (Charlotte, N.C.)

Several organizations are active in the health care security sector, such as the International Association for Health care Security and Safety and ASIS International. The SIA group’s charter states that it is committed to partnering with them and supporting their work “in order to promote common interests and minimize duplication of effort.”
