Industry Influencer Q&A: Access Control on an Open Platform
In February, Integrated Control Technology (ICT), a manufacturer of intelligent access control and security solutions, announced the appointment of Andy Bane as CEO. Since then, ICT has focused on scaling its operations, strengthening its go-to-market strategies, and advancing its technology platform to anticipate and meet evolving customer needs.
This exclusive Industry Influencer Q&A features Mr. Bane’s insights on the company’s journey, industry access control trends, and the value of its newest product, the TSL Access Reader.
How are ICT’s access control solutions customizable and enable integrators to solve unique end-user challenges?
Bane: ICT’s access control solutions are built on an adaptive platform combining open frameworks, integration tools, and automation to enable our integrator partners to take on uniquely challenging end-user design needs.
For example, a custom self-service hotel was designed using ICT’s technology. Working alongside our global integrator partner Securitas Iceland, we were able to customize a fully automated guest system by integrating Protege GX and our access readers with their reservation system. The system syncs bookings with access rights, automatically sending guests their access codes within 15 minutes. PINs are valid only for the booking period and are deleted after checkout. Keypad readers on each door allow guests to use their PINs for different areas of the hotel whether their room, the gym or even ski/bike storage areas. This solution reduced costs for the hotel, increased conveniences for their guests, and overall allowed our partner to win the job because they had the tools to solve unique end-user challenges.
What are the benefits of an open platform, particularly when it comes to access control?
An open platform allows integrators to provide a more robust and unified solution with the flexibility to meet unique end-user requirements like in the hotel example. This also ensures investments are scalable and future-proof.
An open platform brings together every integration into a single, user-friendly dashboard for a single login, one pane of glass view, simplifying system management.
Because ICT’s Protege GX is an open platform, it is simple for integrator partners to offer a fully unified solution to deliver real value to their customers. This open approach means integrations such as video management, elevators, wireless locks, biometric readers, smart building management software, PSIM, can be easily configured based on end customer needs.
Last, an open platform delivers scalability and extensibility to protect legacy investments while enabling future system extensions as user’s access control needs evolve. For instance, if an end-user wants to add biometric readers later, with ICT they won’t face the expense and disruption of replacing the entire system. Instead, they can simply expand on their existing hardware and software investments. In this case, adding biometrics becomes a straightforward, cost-effective upgrade with an open platform solution.
How are the customization and open platform aspects combined in the new TSL Access Reader?
The new TSL Access Reader is a terrific example of ICT’s commitment to customization and open platform flexibility.
Customization options for the TSL include a choice of color, size, the addition of keypad functionality, and unique to ICT – a wide range of LED color settings. ICT’s advanced LED customization allows the reader to match a client’s aesthetic and provide quick, at-a-glance status updates, enhancing both functionality and visual appeal.
The TSL Access Reader was built with multiple communication protocols, including Wiegand, RS485, and OSDP which aligns with our commitment to open platform flexibility. This provides easy integration with existing end-user infrastructures, giving integrators the flexibility to accommodate various project demands. Interoperability also extends to credentials, allowing customers to utilize their own credentials with our solutions if they choose. Instead of requiring a complete system-wide credential replacement, end-users can gradually transition to more advanced credentials, including Bluetooth and NFC technology, in a way that fits their budget and timeline.
What makes the TSL Access Reader unique compared to similar solutions?
ICT’s TSL Access Reader stands out with its unique functionality extending beyond access control to include intrusion detection and building automation. Together, these features form an integral part of ICT’s holistic and unified solution.
For example, the TSL Access Reader enhances intrusion detection capabilities by enabling features such as a double badge action to arm an area when leaving for the day or configuring badge scan sequences to request help during emergencies. The TSL Access Reader also addresses automation use cases to activate lights and HVAC systems in occupied areas while deactivating them in unused spaces.
