Alcatel Supplies Video Surveillance for Romanian Highway

Alcatel announced yesterday the inauguration of its video surveillance solution for the DN1 highway in Romania which connects Bucharest and Azuga. The solution uses video technology and additional subsystems to regulate the highway in terms of traffic volume, violations and accidents.

The contract was awarded by the Romanian General Police Inspectorate and covers a 140-kilometre section of the DN1 highway. It was financed by the European Community as part of a PHARE program.

The Alcatel solution uses video technology integrated with subsystems from third party partners to monitor and enforce driver speeds, automatically recognise licence plates, notify officials of accidents and analyse traffic patterns along the highway. The video surveillance infrastructure is monitored from three major control centres along the highway.

The Traffic Police Department expects the system to greatly increase their efficiency in regulating the highway, thereby increasing the security and safety of its drivers.
